The recent ASHHRA (American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration) Annual Conference brought together hundreds of healthcare professionals from across the country to learn about issues and share industry-leading practices in HR. We were excited to be there to keep abreast of the trends effecting healthcare organizations and employees in an industry hit hard by the pandemic.
This year’s theme, “Connect, Innovate, Transform”, covered a wide range of topics including:
Talent acquisition and retention is a major issue where healthcare systems are currently struggling. According to a 2020 study conducted by The Mayo Clinic and funded by the American Medical Association, found that 1 in 5 physicians and 2 in 5 nurses intend to leave their job while another 1 in 3 physicians, advance practice providers and nurses intend to reduce their work hours.
Stressors are undeniably hitting healthcare professionals from all directions. Pressures further exacerbated by the pandemic, administrative “task saturation” from EMR documentation, patient requests and training requirements are the main concerns raised as we learned from healthcare HR professionals during the conference.
Solutions and Innovations Provide a Beacon of Hope
Nanette Smith Callihan, CHRO of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Inc., stated during her presentation that one of the key values to physicians are solutions provided by their organization that result in “one less stress” in their personal and professional life. This can include meal delivery, childcare resources, cleaning services, and pet care.
Healthcare organizations have been very innovative supporting their employees and clinical team. From providing external resources to manage or supplement the program they offer to listening to and providing little thing that make employee need to improve their daily lives.
ASHHRA’s annual conference demonstrated that well being matters now more than ever, and organizations are increasingly starting to recognize it and act. The industry continuously faces new challenges and well being strategies are essential tools to adapt to the dynamic landscape.
