Summer Fun

Family-Summer-Activities

Today is the first official day of summer! With no school, summer camp and family vacations, summer is a busy time of year, and it can be difficult to fit in physical activity. Here are a few suggestions for getting in your daily physical activity while enjoying quality time with your family this summer.

Host a neighborhood game night: Designate one evening per week for a game of friendly competition. Invite all your neighbors to play a fun game of kickball, softball, or capture the flag. Make sure to choose a game where a lot of people can play!

Community park activities: Community parks offer a variety of free and low cost day camps and activities, such as swimming, theater, arts and crafts, music, archery, tennis or soccer lessons. Some cities also have community sports leagues kids can participate in. For ideas, visit your city parks department’s website or check out the National Recreation and Park Association Website.

Family walks or bike rides: Sometimes the simplest solution is the best! Walking is an excellent way to  exercise and is great for any age. Bike rides can also be a great way to bring the family together and get outside. Visit https://www.traillink.com/ or https://www.alltrails.com/?ref=header to find trails and paths in your area!

Jump Rope/hop scotch/tag: Play a kid-friendly game the whole family can enjoy! Jump rope, tag or hop scotch are all free or low cost activities that get the heart pumping. Or, create a fun game or obstacle course that includes all three!

Hit the beach: Swimming, running around in the sand, building sand castles or playing beach volleyball are all great forms of exercise. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!

The next time you have a few free minutes, make a list of some fun activities you can do with your family to get outside and MOVE! The more prepared you are, the less likely you are to default to a summer of watching TV on the couch.
